Olympic Basketball Overview
Basketball was first played at the 1936 Olympics as an outdoor sport for ameture players only. It was introduced as an indoor sport in 1948. In 1989 a rule was passed allowing professionals to play in international tournaments, including the Olympics. After dominence of the sport as amateurs, their domination continued when, in 1992, they fielded their first 'Dream Team' and won the gold without taking a time out.
Basketball Venue
Preliminary rounds and the quarterfinals will be held at the Basketball Arena and the semis and finals at North Greenwich Area 1.
